“There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the standard sets and best sellers—unread, untouched. (This deluded individual owns woodpulp and ink, not books.) The second has a great many books—a few of them read through, most of them dipped into, but all of them as clean and shiny as the day they were bought. (This person would probably like to make books his own, but is restrained by a false respect for their physical appearance.) The third has a few books or many—every one of them dogeared and dilapidated, shaken and loosened by continual use, marked and scribbled from front to back. (This man owns books.)”

I love this quote.

My books  have cracked spines.  The pages are dogeared.  My books are filled with receipts and old boarding passes as bookmarks.  I re-read books, so it’s a trip down memory lane to see what I bought or where I had traveled to the last time I read the book.  Some of my books have underlined quotes throughout.  Some of my books have phone numbers scribbled on the inside front covers (like cab companies and restaurants).  Few are unblemished.

I can’t imagine having a bookshelf full of untouched and unread books.  I may be a perfectionist, but not where my books are concerned.

“I have advice for people who want to write. I don’t care whether they’re 5 or 500. There are three things that are important: First, if you want to write, you need to keep an honest, unpublishable journal that nobody reads, nobody but you. Where you just put down what you think about life, what you think about things, what you think is fair and what you think is unfair. And second, you need to read. You can’t be a writer if you’re not a reader. It’s the great writers who teach us how to write. The third thing is to write. Just write a little bit every day. Even if it’s for only half an hour — write, write, write.”

“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, a light from the shadows shall spring; renewed shall be blade that was broken, the crown less again shall be king”

—J.R.R Tolkien
